A Brave Coward?

Sec. Angelo Reyes killed himself. One gun shot on his chest. In front of his mother's grave. So brave yet so coward.

It has been weeks since this military scandal was exposed to the public. Reyes' name was included in the list of top military officials who allegedly received a "pabaon" from AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines). He was said to have gotten a whooping P50,000,000.00 when he left and also receives P5,000,000.00 during his term in AFP.

People close to him said that he is innocent. He took his own life not because he was guilty but because of depression, most especially when her wife was dragged into the military corruption issue.

I am not very familiar with this kind of issue. I am not a politician nor a reporter. But I watch news and I read the papers. When I knew that Sec. Angelo Reyes committed suicide, honestly, the first thing that came into my mind was "he was guilty". Why would he kill himself if he is really innocent? Why will he leave his family if he didn't commit such crime? Why will he be a coward if he is truly brave to face all the accusations towards him, like what he said?

But after watching the tv the whole day about this issue, after googling the internet about him, after thinking about what had happened, I have thought of some other possible reasons why he took his own life. He may be a brave soldier who has a weak heart and mind. After all that had happened, he might have thought that there's no way out even if he is innocent. That the people involve in this have plans on how to get him and his family. He could've thought that nothing will be left for him and his family. Maybe those are some reasons why he became depressed the past few weeks, like what the family's spokesperson said.

Whatever his reason may be, I pray for his soul. With his passing, a lot of questions will never be answered anymore. If he is really at fault, then, he brought his secrets with him to his grave. But if he is innocent, we will never know. He missed the chance of making his name clean and clear. He could have been brave enough to face all these. Unfortunately, he was a coward who chose to leave all these behind, including his family, by taking his own life.
